Abstract
English
language
learners
have the
potential
advantage
of
growing
up
to be
bilingual
adults
with
valuable
career
skills
, but
too
often
they
do
not
experience
academic
success
and
choose
to
drop
out
of
school
rather
than
graduating.
The
goal
of this
qualitative
study
was to
interview
students
about
their
reading
preferences
and
habits
as
well
as their
feelings
toward
reading
from
elementary
school
through
high
school
, in
order
to
bring
their
voices
into the
conversation
about
how
best
to
educate
ELL
students
and
keep
them in
school
and on
track
to
become
successful
adults.
Eight
high
school
students
,
all
native
speakers
of
Spanish
of
Mexican
descent
who
had
moved
to the
U.S.
with their
families
before
starting
the
fourth
grade
, were
interviewed
between
December
and
February
of
2012.
The
study
includes
recommendations
for
best
practices
for
teaching
reading
in
all
grades
to
English
Language
Learners
arriving
in the
United
States
before
the
fourth
grade.
