| Abstract | This study investigates the impact of service-learning abroad for high school students. The student research participants traveled to Rwanda or Guatemala in 2009 on trips sponsored by their schools. During and after their travels, students reflected on their experiences through writing journals and essays. Through qualitative research analyzing data including student interviews, reflection essays, journals, and online sources, themes and patterns were identified as common experiences of research participants who had participated in service-learning experiences abroad. Some major themes and areas of growth that many of the students' experiences had in common included an increased feeling of thankfulness for what students had and a greater appreciation of a simpler, less materialistic lifestyle; an increased motivation to continue to travel and learn another language along with a deeper appreciation of other cultures; and finally, an increased desire to work for social change and to serve in the future. |
