Abstract
Content-based
instruction
(CBI)
has
gained
popularity
in the
arena
of
second
language
acquisition
for its
practicality
and
effectiveness
in
teaching
content
and
language
simultaneously.
Research
has
shown
it
to not
only
increase
students'
interest
and
motivation
, but also
achievement
levels.
This
qualitative
study
explored
the
use
of
CBI
with
adult
learners
of
Norwegian
in a
community
education
class.
Interviews
were
used
to
find
meaning
in
participants'
experiences
with
CBI
in
order
to
ultimately
determine
the
usefulness
of
CBI
in this
non-traditional
setting.
The
interviews
revealed
ways
that
CBI
may
be
used
effectively
to
meet
adult
learners
needs
for
safety:
through
a
review
of
materials
, the
use
of
cognates
, and by
building
on
students'
prior
knowledge.
The
interviews
also
revealed
how the
use
of
authentic
tasks
and
materials
in
CBI
activities
can
contribute
to an
increased
interest
in the
target
culture
and a
strong
sense
of
relevancy
to what
is
being
learned.
