Abstract
Language
instructors
have
long
recognized
games
as
providing
a
context
for
meaningful
communication
and
enhancing
motivation.
This
paper
discusses
the
rationale
behind
the
design
and
implementation
of
games
in an
after-school
program
in
order
to
enhance
second
language
acquisition.
Through
qualitative
research
, this
study
aims
to
reveal
the
meaning
and
essence
of
students'
experience
while
playing
games
and
learning
in a
ludic
environment.
The
results
provide
relevant
information
about
students'
expressions
of
joy
,
students'
collaboration
, and how
games
facilitate
students'
understanding
of the
Spanish
language
that
is
being
used.
This
study
also
finds
relevant
information
about
the
students'
perceptions
of
rules
and
competition
and
explores
the
benefits
of
fostering
a
collaborative
and
non-competitive
environment.
Through
the
analysis
of the
researcher's
interactions
as a
participant-observer
, this
paper
presents
ways
to
enhance
the
games'
pedagogical
potential.
This
study
will
conclude
giving
evidence
that
when
games
are
properly
designed
,
implemented
, and
directed
they
can
constitute
a
substantial
part
of
language
programs
and be a
powerful
tool
for
educators.
