| Transcription | "A Stampede by Sioux Indians, at Fort Union, Dacotah. Fort Union, at the mouth of the Yellow Stone River, is sufficiently within the area of Indian depredations to keep the garrison on the alert against surprises of the wily foe. An assault upon the fort itself is not much to be apprehended, as the red warriors have a wholesome appreciation of the resources of those little prairie strongholds; but it is not unusual for a war party to sweep down upon the live stock in the vicinity, or even sometimes to charge close up to the walls of the fort, stampeding the animals and creating no little hubbub and confusion, then scampering away when the rifles of the soldiers knock a few braves from their saddles. The picture we publish was sketched by an artist who was present during one of those lively brushes with the Sioux, and it illustrates the scene very faithfully, giving a correct representation of the fort and the surrounding country." - Article accompanying image, on page 170. |
