| Biography/History | There were two photographic postcards with this note transcribed below, one scanned here and one of Florence Nightingale wearing her snowshoes, but it is not a very clear photograph.
"Snowshoeing in Northern Wisconsin. Picture taken May 2, 1908 - Florence Nightingale. Thru a small town store in Crandon Wisconsin, which catered to the Indian Craft Brot in by them, my father ordered these snow shoes made for us - date 1905. They were made up in the Ely, Minnesota area by the Indians of those Northern woods. For snow shoe hiking we wore heavy wool socks and moccasins. The more snow the better we liked it, and the better the walking. I traveled miles thru the woods, over hills and valleys. One learns to handle the shoes, placing wide part of one shoe so that it fits into narrow part of the other shoe. Foot is strapped on shoe across instep leaving heel free for up and down movement as one walks. You learn to swing along at swift and easy pace. During junior and senior High School I did a great deal of hiking on the shoes. This is my original pair of shoes, which gives one some idea of how well they were made and quality of material used"--Handwritten on paper with photographic postcard. |
