| Biography/History | Emil Ewald Stangler was born in Austria on May 10, 1897 and came to American, settling in Casselton when he was 17. He opened the meat market in Alice, North Dakota in 1905 and operated it for 51 years. Stangler delivered meat to farmers in the area using a hose drawn wagon (probably the one pictured) during busy planting and harvesting times. In 1910, the store was destroyed by fire and replaced by a cement block building. A second story was added later and the building eventually became the Alice Café. E. E. Stangler died in 1965. |
