| Description | A view looking down 5th Ave. in Jamestown, N.D. On the left is a two story building that has a sign that says "1882, Altschul Block, " and another one that says Tobacco, Cigars. There are more storefronts, trees, and utility poles along the street. On the right is a three story brick building, previously named the Klaus House, but called The Gladstone in the photograph and the smaller original Klaus House next to it down the street, also now titled The Gladstone. Other buildings are visible down the street, including the Opera House, distinguishable by its protruding metal entrance. On the right there are signs for a Baker, The Gladstone, and a Barber Shop. There are a few people sitting on the entrance stairs of the Gladstone Hotel, other people sit or stand on the sidewalks. There are two carts being pulled by horses down the street. In the center top of the photograph is a hanging street light. |

| Biography/History | The Klaus House was renamed The Gladstone. Anton Klaus brought Henry C. Koch, a famous architect, from Wisconsin to design both the court house and the new Gladstone. Klaus had a brick factory he started in 1882, and after that many new buildings were built of brick from the Klaus brick factory. |
