| Biography/History | Jamestown College was founded in 1883, six years before North Dakota even became a state. In 1923, the Memorial Gymnasium was erected as a permanent memorial to the student soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice in World War I, and a recognition of those who enrolled in that war and returned to engage again in the peaceful pursuits of mankind. The gymnasium, at the time of dedication, was outstanding as the finest plant for Physical Education in the state. It also contained the first indoor swimming pool in the state. Thus, swimming was made a requirement for graduation. |
