| Biography/History | Theodore Roosevelt was born into a prestigious New York family on October 27, 1858. In 1876 he began attending Harvard and married Alice Hatheway Lee on October 27, 1880. One daughter was born to their union. He then worked in the New York Assembly in the early years of his political career. From 1883 on Roosevelt made several visits to the Badlands for the purposes of ranching, hunting, and adventure. Roosevelt owned the Chimney Butte and the Elkhorn Ranches. It was in the Badlands that he became acquainted with Joe and Sylvane Ferris, brothers from Canada. Additionally, Roosevelt was a contemporary of the Marquis de Mores. In 1886, Roosevelt married Edith Kermit Carow as a result of his first wife dying. They went on to have five children. Theodore Roosevelt spent the rest of his life as a politician. He served as President of the United States from 1901 to 1909. He passed away in 1919. |
