Joseph E. Stevens moved to North Dakota in 1883. He first worked as a woodhawk on the Missouri River before homesteading near Stanton, N.D. in the mid-1880s. Joseph Stephens was married twice and had seven children. Stephens was the first resident of Mercer County to own sheep and became a successful sheep rancher. He died in 1935.
