| Description | View of the bank after it had burned down in the 1895 fire in Neche, N.D. There is a lot of rubble and debris, and a few bits of wall still stand. There are other buildings and roofs in the distance. One building on the left has a ladder against it. About twenty people stand around or on the debris from the fire. There is some smoke and a windmill on the far right. |

| Biography/History | "James L. Symington was born April 11, 1896 to Wm., Jr., and Susannah Symington, who homesteaded five miles southwest of Neche. He has spent his entire life in the Neche area except for the past few years where he is making his home at the Pioneer Rest Home in Bathgate, N. Dak. As a young man, Jim began work at the Neche Bank. July 25, 1926 he married Kathleen Jean Park of Hamilton, N. Dak. at Forest River, N. Dak. Kathleen was a school teacher in Neche. Jim was very active in community affairs, especially sports. Jim started the Symington Insurance Agency which he operated for many years and when he retired he sold it to his son, David. Kathleen passed away June 19, 1974. Jim and Kathleen had four children; Beverly, Owen, David and Beryl. Beverly married Russell H. Schler in 1947 and they graduated from U.N.D. in 1948 and 1949, respectively. Their daughter, Barbara, was born June 1, 1951. They moved to Marshall, Minn. March, 1953. Beverly was killed in a car accident June 7, 1953. Russell died of cancer Oct. 26, 1967. Barbara was raised by her grandparents, the James L. Symingtons, after the death of her mother." |
