| Biography/History | The Academy of Fine Arts was originally called the Academy of the Three Noblest Arts, when it opened in 1757. Catherine the Great (Empress, 1762-1796) commissioned construction of another building, which was built between 1764-1788, and renamed the Imperial Academy of Arts. It was renamed the Russian Academy of Arts in 1933, the Academy of Arts of the USSR in 1947, and the Russian Academy of Arts again in 1991. Informally it was always known as known as the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. It is now the Ilya Repin St. Petersburg State Academic Institute of Fine Arts, Sculpture And Architecture [Илья Репин Санкт-Петербургский государственный академический институт изобразительного искусства, скульптуры и архитектуры] with a student population of approximately 700 students, studying Fine Art, Graphic Arts, Sculpture, Architecture, and Art Theory and History. |
