Biography/HistoryThomas Franklin Manns, a native North Dakotan from Montpelier, received both his bachelor's (1901) and master's (1903) degrees from North Dakota Agricultural College. His mentor, Professor H.L. Bolley, also was his coach on the football team. After graduating in 1903, he was appointed a government teacher in the Philippine Islands, and with his wife spent three years there. Upon returning to the United States, he accepted a position of Assistant Botanist at the Ohio Experiment Station. In 1912 he left for Delaware, where he headed the plant pathology and soil bacteriology department at the Experiment Station in Newark. While at Delaware, he took his doctorate at the University of Pennsylvania. (College & State [North Dakota Agricultural College], Vol. V, January-February 1921, p. 8)
