| Transcription | "Joe Mattern and His Uncommon Pigeon. This picture by the Strand Studio shows Joe Mattern holding a pigeon which came to his place sometime ago. Joe doesn't know just when it came but about the latter part of August it came up to him as if it wanted to talk to him. Joe, who farms north of Rugby, noticed that the bird had a band on its leg. Fellows that know pigeons claim there is no doubt but that the bird is a carrier pigeon. That number on the band was AU50 OSH 2429. So far no word has been received as to the meaning of the band or where the bird was banded, when and why." - caption with image published in The Pierce County Tribune, September 25, 1952, p. 1. |
