Biography/HistoryWilliam E. "Bill" Shemorry was a native of Williston, N.D. who began work in the newspaper industry as a newsboy selling the Williston Herald and the Williams County Farmers Press. In 1953, he started to publish the Williston Plains Reporter, which he operated for 25 years before selling to the Williston Herald. Shemorry then began to concentrate on his own writing and photography. In addition to writing many books on the history of Williams County, he also collected photographs of early North Dakota photographers. Shemorry was an active member of the Williston Fire Department, was Civil Defense Chief of Williams County for three years in the 1950's, and was a combat photographer in World War II. Shemorry's photograph of the discovery of oil in North Dakota on April 4, 1951 at the Clarence Iverson No. 1 is one of the most famous oil photographs ever taken, and was published in many national publications.

"Local photographers in PI Williston Basin book
by Doreen Chaky, for the Oil Reporter
Two Williston photographers whose work is familiar to Williston Basin Oil Reporter readers - Earle Dodd and Bill Shemorry - have several photographs each in a new book, The Williston Basin - 1980, published by the Petroleum Information Corporation, a subsidiary of A.C. Nielsen Company. The cover photo is by Schwartz Photography in Sidney, Mont., and many oil companies have also provide photos and other illustrative material for the book. Although the book contains technical information, it should be of interest to the general public.
The PI Corporation is a leading gatherer and supplier of exploration/production data to the United States petroleum industry. PI provides the data the Oil Reporter reports in its well listing each edition.
The book outlines the history of petroleum exploration in the Williston Basin and contains summaries of the development of the important fields, including development through mid-1980.
The geological development of the Williston Basin is summarized and illustrated with numerous charts, maps, graphs and photographs.
Also discussed are problems encountered in the Williston Basin, drilling and completion practices, as well as leasing practices. Current and historical production summaries are also included.
Pipeline and refineries in the Basin are notes, and there is a list of all successful and unsuccessful wells that had shows of oil and gas, as reported to PI.
To order The Williston Basin - 1980 call 303-8252181 or write Petroleum Information Corporation, Attention: Special Publications, Box 2616, Denver, Colo. 80201."
