| Biography/History | Tyra Mattson was born in Sweden in 1876 and studied painting in Paris, France. She married Henrik Schanche who studied to become a doctor in Norway. They came to America in 1904 and lived at Portland, N.D. and where their three children were born. In 1910 the family moved to Minot, N.D. where Henrik died suddenly. Tyra then homesteaded with Randi Garmann, Henrik's nurse, near Tioga in Williams County, N.D. After proving up her claim she lived in Grand Forks, N.D. and her farm. She died at Grand Forks in 1941. Randi Garmann was born at Bergen, Norway in 1881 where she was educated as a nurse. She immigrated to America in 1905 and lived at Portland, N.D. where she was a nurse to Dr. Schanche. After the doctor died in 1910 Randi and his widow, Tyra Schanche and her children homesteaded on adjoining claims near Tioga in Williams County, N.D. She married Haakon Stockman, also an immigrant from Norway, and they lived on her homestead. She died in 1954 and Haakon in 1966. |
