Biography/HistoryJohan Olai Hougen was born on March 6, 1857, in Norway. His family emmigrated to the United States the spring of 1857, arriving in Chicago on July 4 and settling in Iowa. Hougen attended Luther College and the Theological Seminary in Madison, Wisconsin. Hougen's first call was in Fargo in 1881 where he served five congregations.
Hougen's parsonage was the site of many meetings of the Northwestern Lutheran College Association--the organization that formed Concordia College. Charter members of the association included J. M. O. Ness, J. O. Hougen, G. H. Gerberding, O. C. Beck, O. G. Farsdale, N. S. Dalen, Ole Holte, A. A. Trovaten, Lars Christianson, R. Rasmusson, John Hanson, and H. T. Brattenborg. At the Association's April 15, 1891 meeting, J. O. Hougen suggested the name "Concordia, " meaning hearts in harmony, for the new school.
After many relocations, Hougen settled in Eugene, Oregon where he passed away on January 7, 1927.
