Big Bend was established on October 1, 1946, and was one of the most successful boom towns connected to the construction of the Garrison Dam. Population declined rapidly after the construction on the dam ceased. Silver City was the first of the boom towns built in response to the construction of the Garrison Dam, so named because all of the town's buildings were painted silver.
