Biography/HistoryMartin Tabert was arrested for vagrancy in Florida, and was leased to a lumber company chain gang. A combination of flogging by the gang boss and illness killed Tabert. His family sent money to pay Tabert's fine, but the money did reach Florida in time. Judge Gudmundur Grimson investigated the case and the publicity brought to the case eventually changed the treatment of prisoners in Florida and across the United States.
