Biography/History The steamboat Western, a sternwheel packet with a wood hull, was built in Pittsburgh, Pa., in 1872, and made her first trip to Fort Benton, Montana, that year. In all, she made nine trips to Fort Benton, the last one in 1878. On March 27, 1881, she was cut down by ice during the great gorge at Yankton, S.D. Bibliographic Reference Way, Frederick.
