George M. Black opened his first Fargo business in 1912. In 1929 Sears, Roebuck & Co. reached an agreement with Black to buy his property. Black used the proceeds to build the tall addition on to the two original floors, which housed the Sears, Roebuck & Co. store. The building was the tallest in North Dakota until the completion of the new Capitol in 1934.
