The law allowed heads of families and single men and women to claim 160 acres as long as they built a house and improved the land by planting crops. Louise G. Blankenship was one of many women who took advantage of the law to own land. Under the law, women over the age of 18 had the right to claim 160 acres of land as long as they were single or head of the household. Many women took advantage of this opportunity, though many actually lived and worked in a nearby town. Some women, though, lived on their homesteads for most of the year and made the improvements necessary to prove up.
