| Biography/History | In 1914, the state dedicated the site of the Whitestone Hill Massacre with a monument to the Civil War soldiers who fought and died there. Among the people gathered for the event were several of the Dakotas who remembered the massacre including Takes-His-Shield, Red Fish, and Red Bow. Some of these men spoke to the gathered crowd through interpreter Aaron McG. Beede. Also in attendance were Governor Hanna and J. M. Austin who preserved Takes- His-Shield's pictograph of the massacre. |
