Harper's Weekly and Harper's Monthly magazines were very popular in the United States in the 19th century. They carried news reports, especially of Civil War battles, as well as fictional stories and poetry. This illustration was drawn by an artist who was not at the battle from the reports submitted by General Sully and his officers. It appeared in Harper's on October 31, 1863. There were no photographs of the battle.
