Farming began at the North Dakota State Penitentiary in 1893 or 1894 with 9 horses, 12 cows, 70 hogs, and 200 chickens. By 1928, the farming operation had increased significantly at the Penitentiary, with prison farm land increased to 1349 acres, and rented crop land 1506 acres.
