Ruth Meiers worked for the Mountrail County Welfare Board, and various other social welfare organizations before serving in the North Dakota House from 1975-1984. She was elected as North Dakota's first woman Lieutenant Governor in 1984, and served from 1985 until her death in office in 1987. The Ruth Meiers Hospitality House in Bismarck is named in her honor.
