Early bridges were built and maintained by local townships for horse and wagon traffic. In 1904 the weight of Martin Thompson's rig, a Nichols & Shepard steam traction engine and threshing machine, was too great for this bridge over the Goose River, six miles southwest of Hatton, N.D.
