Frank Anders was born at Fort Abraham Lincoln, and learned to be a machinist while working for the Northern Pacific Railroad. He enlisted in the National Guard in 1894 and was sent to the Philippines in 1898. He won the Medal of Honor as a member of Young's Scouts.
