| Biography/History | George F. Will was known as an archaeologist, anthropologist, ethnologist, naturalist, nurseryman, seedsman, and historian. He grew up with the seed company of his father, Oscar H. Will, and with him worked with the Upper Missouri tribes to acquire and crossbreed early varieties of corn. Following his graduation from Harvard College in archaeology and ethnology, he developed those interests, and published items on the Upper Missouri Region, working with both the Mandan and Arikara tribes to describe material culture, agricultural techniques, and ceremonials. He served as president of the State Historical Society of North Dakota from 1942-1955. William Duncan Strong was a leader in the world of American ethnology, archaeological theory, and also served as a writer and teacher in the field. His collection of papers reside at the National Anthropological Archives of the Smithsonian Institution. |
