| Description | Four men, one woman, four children, and one dog stand outside the Winona, N.D. post office. One buggy, one wagon, and two horses are to the left of the post office building. One sign on the building advertises Star Brand shoes, and the proprietor's name J.J. Huse. A smaller sign on the left hand side of the building advertises gasoline. Another sign identifying the building as the post office is also visible. Curtains billow out of the upper floor windows. The ground around the building is rough, but a few bushes and flowers are visible. |

| Biography/History | Frank Fiske served as an assistant steamboat captain prior to his lifelong work as a studio photographer, mostly associated with Fort Yates N.D. He learned the trade from S.T. Fansler, post studio photographer, and remained in Fort Yates to document the town, the Standing Rock Agency, and the changing ways of the frontier. Fiske was also a writer, and served for a time as a newspaper editor, and wrote a popular column carried in many newspapers. He was best known for his Indian photographs, which depicted everyday Indian life, as well as studio views. |
