| Transcription | "The Custer Battlefield, Little Big Horn River, Mont. Terr'y. Here, on 25 June, 1876, five troops, 212 enlisted men and seventeen commissioned officers of the command of Lieut. Col. Geo. Armstrong Custer, 7th U.S. Cavalry were killed by hostile Indians under Gall, Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull, and their followers. We call the photo 'The silent sentinels of the Seventh'"--Handwritten on back of photograph. |

| Biography/History | Most of the 7th Cavalry casualties were buried where they fell on the battlefield. In 1881, the remaining bodies were exhumed and reburied at the top of Custer Hill where the 7th Cavalry monument now stands. |
