The first house built for the Custers at Fort Lincoln burned on February 6 1874. Another structure was built with a recognizable bay window on the side of the house. The second house, and other original fort and buildings at Fort Abraham Lincoln were disassembled in 1894. A reconstruction of the Custer House was opened to the public in June 1989.
