Charles K. Otto started the Valley City Grocery Company. After leaving the grocery business, he worked in real estate and the clothing business. He was appointed Valley City's postmaster in 1933. He was married to Julia Anderson, who died in 1912. He then married Elsie Simons in 1913. They had two daughters: Corinne and Janet.
