| Biography/History | Era Bell Thompson was born in Des Moines, Iowa, but raised in Driscoll, N.D. The family later moved to Bismarck, and she graduated from Bismarck High School in 1924. She attended the University of North Dakota for two years, and graduated from Morningside College in Iowa after studying journalism. She moved to Chicago in 1933. She wrote several books, American Daughter; Africa, Land of my Father; and White on Black. She became the editor of Negro Digest in 1947, and joined Ebony magazine in 1949, where she served as co-editor and international editor. She was awarded the Theodore Roosevelt Roughrider Award in 1976. Era Bell Thompson died in Chicago in 1986. |
