| Biography/History | George E. Jennings was born near Brasher Falls New York, came west, and north through S.D. arriving in Bismarck in 1880. He established the George Jennings Grocery store on the east corner of 5th and Main. He sold the store and established the Hillside Dairy farm north of the State Capitol. He died in May of 1908. He married Sena Caroline Mickelson (born in Two Rivers, WI, September 2, 1869, who came to Bismarck with her mother Talota Johnson Mickelson in 1879. They had traveled by covered wagon through NE and S.D. coming by way of Yankton to Bismarck. Sena's mother cooked for the bricklayers that built the first capitol. The Jennings were married New Years Day 1885. They were charter members of the First McCabe Methodist Church. They had five children: George William, John Martin, Thomas McKinley, Gertrude Lucille and Sara Almeda. During the blizzard of 1896 George Jennings was the Rural mail carrier for the townships northeast of Bismarck driving a team of horses on a sled. |
